A change of craft today... a project that has been on the go for some years - eight to be more accurate!
I had barely started a shawl for my daughter, very early in her pregnancy, when my son and his wife announced that they too were expecting a wee one... as a shawl takes me approximately nine months to knit, they understood that it would not be ready by the time baby was born.
I did start it that year, and plodded away on an off over the years, but with RSI, carpel tunnel and cubital tunnel issues, it had been a while since it had seen the light of day
This year they announced that they were expecting a baby in September... so when I was recovered from surgery in March I started off again. And finished it only two days after Annalise was born.
I seem to work best with deadlines!!
The shawl was knitted on 2.5 mm circular needles in 2 ply wool - a lace weight.
The pattern was actually a tablecloth in a Burda magazine published in 1993
Although it looks complicated, it was basically one pattern repeated 47 times in the bulk of the knitting
I altered the edge pattern a wee bit, and once it was washed and blocked, it had a pretty scalloped look to the edge.
Near the end each round took me close on an hour, but the cast off took me nearly three hours. There were 1,410 stitches on the last rounds.

Goodness that is a beautiful shawl Maxine, so delicate and intricate and I can't begin to know how one makes something circular. I can't knit, tried it many times but just couldn't get the hang of it, much to my Mum's disappointment as she has always knitted until arthritis got the better of her fingers.

My mother knitted me a shawl in 2ply when my first baby was due, and it has done two more generations of babies already, and no doubt it will be passed on again.
I love a circular shawl, and I know just how much work was involved in making this. Well done. I am sure it will be treasured! xx
Beautiful and worth the wait! I used to crochet but haven't for years but I never learned to knit. My mom tried to teach me but it just never caught.

What a beautiful and precious heirloom you've created for your grandbabies! I don't knit, so can't truly appreciate all the skill involved in this lovely shawl, but I surely can appreciate how delicate and gorgeous it looks. This little one will feel so cozy and loved when wrapped in something made especially for her by her Grandma, and just think of it passing down through the generations! This is just so impressive, and made even more so with all the handicaps of the carpal tunnel, etc. It's just wonderful Maxine! TFS & Hugs (& lovely cuddles too!)

Maxine - this is absolutely stunning! So many hours spent but such a such a beautiful result. I am sure this will become a family heirloom. I am currently knitting on a much more 'industrial' level as I have been asked to help out providing knits for a charity event raising funds to provide dogs to help the disabled. So for speed I am working mainly with 4ply and DK but only have until the end of the month - it was a late request so really must crack on with it. Thank you for sharing your very beautiful project. xx

What a stunning work of 'heart' Maxine! So precious. My mummy knitted a shawl for each of our firstborns (I'm one of seven children!!) and it has meant so much to all of us, so I know this will be well loved! Congratulations on the birth of Annalise, my eldest niece on my side of the family is Annaliese with an extra 'e'! Hehe. Love that name. Congrats to you and your family on her safe and happy arrival.
